Christmas time is over and we have ahead three dark and cold winter months. During this weeks the locals usually go to ski to the Alps and the city remains quite inactive. Some museums and attractions close, there are no festivals and very few festivities. It’s the perfect moment to visit a place built specially for the this period of time: Winterhafen.
At the end of the XIX century there was no adequate place for the ships in the Danube during the winter between Passau and Vienna. The construction of the winter harbor began in May 1897. The water area is about 6.5 hectares and it was necessary to build a dam with a width of 20 meter towards the Danube. During World War II there was a berth of the "Danube Flotilla" of the Wehrmacht (lit. “defense force”, the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany between 1935 to 1946) in the winter harbor and even the command of the unit was housed here.
To the north of Winter Harbor, on the headland between the harbor and the Danube, there are several bunkers from this time than are national monuments. Nowadays they are used by the local rowing clubs as storerooms.
Wrap your self up and discover this quite side of the city, with the big ships waiting for warmer days, the cranes, an abandoned tennis court and the facilities built by the rowing clubs, like the stairs that let them carry their boats from the bunkers to the water of the river.
